In yoga, how do you successfully balance on one foot

This has always been a challenge for me. During yoga routines, whenever we're asked to balance on one foot and hold that pose, I always fall over. Is there a trick to accomplishing this?

I was struggling with this today, sometimes the outsides of my feet hurt or cramp. The best advice I have is to make sure your weight is evenly distributed across your whole foot, that your standing leg is straight and strong (all muscles tight), and most of all that you're focused. It really helps to choose a point on the floor/ wall/mirror in front of you to fix your gaze on. Go slow, be patient and keep breathing!

Thank you lady.longhorn.  I am really facinated with yoga and marvel at the way some people are able to master it.  But the one foot thing really embarrassed me when everyone else was balanced and I was floundering around. Next time I will attempt to follow your advice.
